The History of Bridgeport, CT 06605

Bridgeport Connecticut is a unique historical seaport town in the U.S state of Connecticut, with a population estimated at 140,839 in 2021. With an estimated population of 140,839 in 2021, it is ranked as the fifth-populated in New England. It lies along the East Coast on the Connecticut River, south of New London and west of New York City. Bridgeport has played a major role in American History and is named after a series of British river ferry bridges, which crossed the Connecticut River to connect Boston and Connecticut. The story of these early bridges can be found in the many National Register Historic Places and was commemorated by building the first bridge across the Connecticut River. The early years of Bridgeport Connecticut were marked by much development, including the erection of state institutions, such as the Connecticut State House and the Old State House.

These early institutions provided an important location for debating issues of popular enlightenment, religion and government. Also important were the public schools, which were established in 1734. The first school built in Bridgeport was the Susquehanna College, which was burned down by a mob, but rebuilt. Two other colleges were established in Bridgeport during the middle years of the new century: Yale University and the College of Rhode Island. In the early years of New England history, Abraham Lincoln served as the Speaker of the House of Representatives. He was also a lawyer and later became the governor of New York. He is often referred to as the father of the United States of America, due to his role in putting together the very first legislative session after the Revolution. Several of his political views are remembered in structures such as the Statue of Liberty and the National Mall. Also notable in Bridgeport history is John Hancock, who served as the first governor of New Hampshire. An example of important early town development is the construction of the Susquehanna Plantation, a site that would later be referred to as the world's first town. The Susquehanna Plantation included a two-story dwelling, two-storey houses, a ground, a stable and a grist mill.

In 1740 the first of the" Barnum's warehouses" was built on the site of the old Susquehanna Plantation. Another significant example of town development is the fact that the present town of Bridgeport Connecticut, across from New York City, received funds from the Continental Congress to build a ferry across the Connecticut River. This ferry was later known as the Reading Tunnel, and it linked Boston and New Haven, which are the same shore that John Winthrop visited as a young man.In the early years of New England history, Thomas Lee and others were well-known for being extremely popular hair stylists. These individuals were well-regarded in their community, and they were well-respected in the cultural circles of the new York city as well. The Barnum and Bailey firm, with the most notable proprietor being John Barnum, quickly rose to prominence in the region, and the Beardsley brothers also soon became famous. While it has been suggested that John Barnum may have also been the inspiration for the famous saying, "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink," there is little definitive evidence that this is the case. There are a number of places in Bridgeport Connecticut, where one can find original historic buildings, including a T. Barnum style "General Store," an early example of a Beardsley brook mill, as well as a restored house known as the Comfort Inn. Today, thanks to the efforts of local municipalities and preservation groups, the Main Street Heritage Center has been formed, and it continues to restore historic buildings, as well as maintain an online inventory of all the properties that are on the center's "ilts." This includes the previously mentioned "General Store," which serves foods, knickknacks, and other memorabilia from the Thomas and Friends era. Among the buildings that have been retained by the organization is the historic T. Barnum House, a.k.a. "The Barnum House," and the restored "T. Barnum Family Home," an early example of an upscale New England home.
